New England Warming More Rapidly Than the Vast Majority on Earth, Analysis Shows.
The US region famous for its colonial history, maple syrup and frigid, snow-bound winters is experiencing a swift transformation. Fresh analysis indicates that New England is heating up more quickly than almost anywhere else on the globe.
Breakneck Pace of Transformation
The speed of warming in New England makes it the fastest-heating area of the continental United States, according to the research. The rate of its warming has reportedly increased significantly in the last half-decade.
"Temperatures is not only rising, it's accelerating," explained a lead researcher on the study. "It's really accelerated in recent years, which was unexpected to me. Our climate is shifting in a new direction, after being largely consistent for millennia."
The analysis places the north-eastern US among the fastest-warming areas in the world, together with the polar region and parts of Europe and China. "The region is now moving toward being like the south-eastern US," the scientist added.
Analysis Approach and Results
For the study, researchers analyzed multiple data sources on day and night temperatures and snowpack dating back to 1900. The review covered the six states of the New England region.
They discovered that New England has warmed by an mean of 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the global average, with the planet heating by around 1.3°C in the same period.
"This represents extremely rapid warming, which is worrying," said the researcher.
Key Warming Patterns
- Minimum temperatures are rising more quickly than daytime temperatures.
- Winters are warming at double the speed of other seasons.
- The harsh winter chill New England is known for is being diminished.
Marine Influences and the "Heat Battery"
A primary reason for this exceptional build-up of heat may be shifts in the North Atlantic. The world's oceans are taking in more than 90% of the surplus thermal energy trapped by greenhouse gases.
In the north Atlantic, an increase of meltwater from Greenland’s melting glaciers is slowing down the Gulf Stream. This is pushing heated ocean water into the coastal waters, concentrating heat along the shoreline that is then pushed further inland by wind patterns.
"Surplus thermal energy from climate change is being stored in the sea like a massive storage unit," explained the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the atmosphere and New England is a receiver of that energy."
Impacts on Life and Extremes
Once considered a mild climate haven, New England has experienced extreme climate events in the past decade, including devastating floods and prolonged drought.
The rising heat endangers cherished aspects of regional life:
- Syrup production is being affected by changing climate conditions.
- Cold-weather activities are impacted; an ice hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been called off or relocated repeatedly due to unsafe ice conditions.
- Winter tourism have faced difficulties because of insufficient snowfall.
"I live just north of Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the ponds regularly," said the researcher. "That sort of thing has largely disappeared from large parts of the southern part of the region."
